If the answer to question 1 is, “I wanna make lots of money!” this person needs to learn a few key ideas before entering the industry.
Yes, you can make lots of money dancing, but “making lots of money” is not a goal. Next they’ll say, “Okay I want to be rich!” Still not a goal. “Ok, I wanna be a billionaire!”
Unfortunately, just as our educational system fails to teach financial literacy, it also fails to prepare our youth to create a structured life plan. A multi-millionaire, who has years of experience, hundreds of high powered contacts, and a track record of successful businesses and investments could conceivably become a billionaire.
For someone just out of high-school, with no experience, limited education, few high caliber contacts, and no assets, billionaire status is not even a dream. It is a fantasy. A fantasy that, for nearly every person on this planet, will never come to fruition.
Every personal growth book that’s worth reading will stress extensively the importance of setting goals. Goals help you achieve your dreams. Goals turn fantasies into dreams. They turn dreams into a plan of action. Goals allow you to break down big problems into smaller, manageable pieces. If you don’t learn how to set and accomplish goals effectively, you might as well buy lottery tickets.
You need to have an out. A light at the end of the tunnel. Go pick up any book on personal success and they all have one thing in common. Goals. How to set them, how to achieve them. Long-term and short term. A good exercise is to imagine your life without any financial limitations. How would you spend your time? Would you create and lead a charitable organization? Pursue an advanced degree in archeology? Think about it.
Many people fantasize about having so much money they’d never need work again. And they wouldn’t work. And they won’t ever have that kind of money either. The very wealthy find ways to make money doing things they enjoy. Yes, most held jobs they didn’t enjoy at first, but they leveraged this time into assets, knowledge, and experience that allowed them to proceed to the next phase of their life plan.
For the time being let’s set some simple goals.
These are some simple goals that will get you through your first couple of weeks. Most of them simply require the self discipline to start and finish simple tasks. Once you’ve completed these steps, you’re on your way to a healthy career and a life full of fun and achievement. Goals are so very important that we can’t stress it enough. The process of creating good goals and completing them are often the only difference between successful people and those who look back on life with regret.
Don’t worry, we’ll come back to this later and show you everything you need to know about goal setting and personal success. Most important is to get you up and running, making money quickly. You can learn rest of material ‘on the job’.
